Villagers in the Mass Meeting at Khunti
On July 5, 2011, the Adivasis of Munda Khutkatti areas – Khunti, Murhu and Arki blocks of Khunti district gathered in Kachary Maidan of Khunti situated at a distance of 31 kilometres from the state capital of Jharkhand. In fact, the Khunti district administration had given them permission to hold a rally and mass meeting against the police atrocities. However, when the villagers started arriving to Kachary Maidan, Manoj Kaushik the Superintendent of police (Khunti) also reached to the venue and questioned Birsa Munda the leader of “Mundari Khutkati Ewam Bhuihari Parishad,” “Why you have brought so many people to protest against the police?” Birsa responded, “Villagers are facing police atrocities therefore they have come to express their pains and sufferings to the Deputy Commissioner”. The SP went back to his office after hearing Birsa’s response. Read more…

Dhirendra's wife
Since inception of the state, the Jharkhand government has been carrying on anti-naxal operations and building up the people friendly police in the state simultaneously. In the recent development, Neyaz Ahmed, the director general of police and the executive officer of the ‘operation green hunt’, who is also the first top cop in the history of Jharkhand to get promotion after retirement, has promised to make his police men the ‘people friendly’. In fact, he knows about how the policemen are inhuman in nature, which results in inhuman treatment, torture and brutal killing of the innocent people time to time. The recent brutal killing of Dhirendra Kumar in Barwada police station clearly indicates of how the police stations have become the safest place of inhuman treatment, torture and brutal killings. Police torture
When the people of the entire world were greeting to each other, bursting crackers and enjoying delicious food on the occasion of the new year 2010, the police of Chhatarpur, Town and Sadar police stations of Palamu district, (which is the most Maoist infested area according to the government and the media reports) in Jharkhand, were very much engaged in humiliating, torturing and beating to Rajendra Yadav of Telaria village (Chhatarpur) alleging him as a Naxalite without any proof, which led to his death. He had been illegally detained in the police custody for more than 60 hours. The police justified it saying, “Since the Maoists had planted landmines on the road therefore Rajendra Yadav was not taken to the court.” Interestingly, the police did not recover any landmine from the spot therefore one can see it as an attempt to bury the inhuman acts of the Indian’s inhuman gunmen. Ten months old baby Himanshu was sleeping at home with his parents in the afternoon. When he woke up, he did not find his father forever. It would be an upheaval for him when he would come to know that his father was dragged out of his bed, shot dead by the cops and depicted it as ‘encounter death’. But what would be his reactions? Will he follow his father’s footsteps? No one can imagine exactly! Himanshu’s father and uncles had taken the path of revenge when their father was killed for delivering justice, and three of them were shot dead by the cops in a fake encounter. This is the painful story of Nawadaben Police encounter, where three brothers – Ramji Singh (33), Lakshman Singh (30) and Bharat Singh (28) were shot dead by the police on 25th of August 2006. But even after running from pillar to post the family members of three slain brothers are still waiting for justice to be delivered to them. Read more…

Bihar is the most defamed state in India for killings, counter killings and the impunity practiced by the police. Nathnager, Bhagalpur incident of Police torture hit the Media headlines once again when the human rights committee of the Bihar Legislative council gave a clean chit to the cops involved in dragging of a petty thief behind their motorcycle; the entire country was shocked to witness it. Instead of uncovering the facts based on the human rights standards, the committee defined it for shielding the police.
The most startling fact is that the committee released its report within two months and the cops were made innocent despite of evidence. That’s why G.P. Dohre, the Ex-Director General of Police, Bihar calls the ‘Bihar as a ‘place of impossible’. Obviously it’s a great challenge to combat impunity in Bihar, where the society as a large supports police torture and also denies human rights without a second thought. Read more…
